Interpretation, Delivery and Performance

This workshop is designed to:

  •  Improve your interpretive skills, ability to ‘act’ and connect with a song
  • Give you the opportunity to gain valuable performance experience in a relaxed, fun environment
  • Improve your stage presence
  • Increase your confidence as a performer

The most important aspect of any performance is the total, unreserved connection with the song and, if a live performance, the connection with the audience as an extension of this. Whether we consciously realise it or not, we love to listen to songs and singers, and watch performances that move us, primarily because we are living vicariously through them. In a live environment, we feel that the singer is singing directly to us or even for us, portraying the feelings we cannot articulate. If the song is emotional and the singer’s delivery is believable…we feel their emotion too.

If the song is about falling in love we absolutely must believe that the singer is, at least in the moment, falling in love or we will find the performance confusing.
If the song is about having a great time, we must believe the singer is having the time of their life or the performance will be unavoidably dubious.

While performing a song, we must believe that you mean every single word or we will not enjoy the performance even if your technique is flawless. In other words, the most important thing for any performance is CONNECTION WITH THE AUDIENCE.

This is, of course, the scary part. If you keep a barrier between yourself and those scary faces in the crowd you can reason that, if they reject you or dislike your performance, at least you didn’t bare your soul! That’s a valid consolation after all. If you let all your defences drop and really, sincerely, fearlessly try to make that connection with the song and the audience and, for whatever reason, they didn’t ‘get’ you…well, even the most confident among us would find that pretty daunting.

Herein lies the irony. This connection, this honesty, is the very thing that audiences crave more than anything else- including flawless technique. This workshop is all about giving you the tools and confidence to perform from your heart.
